Save Our Sparrows (SOS) NHS - Immigration reponsible for NHS Crisis?

Save Our Sparrows (SOS) NHS - Immigration reponsible for NHS Crisis?

Is NHS in crisis? If it is in crisis then what is the cause of the drain on the budget?

Overview

What was made:

Tableau story book.

We access that NHS is in crisis. We looked at various data sources as referenced in the Tableau story and below. We then looked at the possible causes for NHS being in crisis. Based on reports and stats from the the Office for National Statistic (ONS) we illustrated bar charts and maps to compare immigration numbers against patient demand by age and place of origin.

  • Analysis of NHS budget and demand
  • Population growth and compostion forecast up to 2039
  • Immigrant population by age present and forecast

Background and objectives:

HEALTH

Is NHS in crisis? If it is in crisis then what is the cause of the drain on the budget?

  • Is it immigration or an aging population?
  • Is health tourism a problem? People go to Europe for dentists do they go the other way?
  • How does NHS compare with other countries?
  • How does NHS compare with other countries?

  • If we have a budget problem because of people living 30 to 40 years longer and the older people have most of the housing wealth locked up and are living on final pension scheme and using NHS for treatment as they age it is our hypothesis that there won't be much money left in the economy for education, housing or anything else. If it wasn't for net contribution from immigration our budget would be a lot worse!
Outcome:

We found a deeper insight was achieved by mixing data sets. By using public data from ONS and Census, we made a case to showcase that NHS is in problem. Currently every £7 out of £10 spent by NHS is spent on care for people over 60 years of age. We have shown that this population is predicted to grow to be more than 25% of total population by 2039.

Potential future research:

  • NHS is in a crisis. Immigration has helped to alleviate this budget challenges. Without Immigration the NHS crisis would be a lot worse than it is today.
  • Calculate how much the cost of supporting our over 65 population is in terms of pensions, healthcare and other subsidies?
  • When will our budget run out without increases in taxes or other forms if nothing changes?
  • How much would the cost of supporting 25% of population over 65 be given that it is £7 out of £10 today and they are 17% of the population?

How it was made

Hypothesis & finding data

It is not very easy to find a lot of actual data or one finds lots of data but doesn't know what is relevant.
It was our experience that 60% of our time was spent searching for data. It would be great if sites made access to raw data easier.

Getting frustrated with not finding data

Spending a lot of time going though search engines and finding pages that don't have reference to raw data is frustrating. Finding lots of data but not being able to make sense of it is frustrating. You need to stick at it and talk to others. Eventually you will find data that is good, usable and verifiable.

Found data!

Once you find good data then it gets a lot more fun. You need to now process the data and adapt it to get information you need. Or maybe it is better to say process the data to see if you can support your hypothesis or disprove it. Make sure you are aware of your assumptions if you are further processing the data.

Be aware of temporary data files when working with Tableau

We created a story book in Tableau. Story book created temporary data for graphs. As one moves things around and changes the underlying sheet that the story is based on, there is a chance that one  realises that the temporary data is missing and on the next refresh the graph disappears.

We had to replicate data in Excel. The temporary table in excel to get our graph back.

Using Data Campfire website

There is no auto-save when you are adding your steps to the site.
Make sure you save often.... You can only add one image to each step so do not try to drop a second image for upload onto a step that already has an image. We had typed everything up and the steps where ready. We accidentally droped another image to a step and as we had not saved we lost all our work! So this is the second attempt at writing the steps you are reading.

Closing thoughts

We are in an ageing society. Taking care of the elderly is as important as taking care of the young generation. We seem to be in a situation that the elderly are taking more money out of the system than putting in. This situation is not sustainable and it needs addressing. One thing that is helping us is that without immigration, we would be in a much worse situation!

Let's make sure we save our migrating sparrows. Without them, we are going to make the bad situation even worse!
